Creating Asthma Friendly Environment for Children with Asthma in Belgrade

Abstract

Background: although asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood, the knowledge of asthma is poor and prejudice still presents a great issue. Aim: to register prevalence of asthma in 20.000 children (6-15 years) from 28 Belgrade primary schools, to improve knowledge of asthma in parents, teachers, pediatricians, nurses and children with asthma with aim to improve control of asthma and create asthma friendly society.

Methods: children with asthma were selected through a questionnaire, clinical examination and Skin prick test. Asthmatic children, parents, teachers, pediatricians and nurses were educated about asthma and medications though 5 audio visual lectures. Knowledge of asthma, children’s and parents' attitude towards asthma, medications, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), their self confidence in management and use of asthma medications and control of children’s asthma were assessed before and 6 months after the education.

Results: Prevalence of asthma was 8.61%. Knowledge of asthma in educated groups (578 children, 578 parents, 871 teachers, 34 pediatricians and 45 nurses) increased (p<0.05); percentage of parents and children who considered asthma well controlled increased (p<0.05). Children’s and parents' fear of asthma and medications decreased (p<0.05); their self-confidence in asthma management increased; percentage of children afraid to admit to have asthma decreased and ETS at home decreased (p<0.05) after the education. Control of asthma and proper use of medications improved (p<0.05).

Conclusion: audiovisual education was a successful way to transfer knowledge, improve control of child’s asthma and change attitude towards asthma and medications in parents and children with asthma.
